CEH – Training Victorian interpreters to understand the NDIS

The Centre for Culture, Ethnicity & Health (CEH) delivers capacity building and professional development training sessions for practitioners working in and with the disability service sector.

Through its Understanding the NDIS workshops, (CEH) is aiming to train all the interpreters in Victoria who feel that understanding the new disability system is essential to their work.

Since 2018, CEH has trained over 1000 interpreters and interpreting students, at a current rate of one hundred interpreters a month through weekly workshops.

The workshops are run in language-specific groups.

Interpreters debate the best way to translate NDIS key concepts and terminology, to increase their understanding of the NDIS processes and pathways for applicants.

The interpreter training is also an opportunity for CEH to showcase some of its recently created resources:

  • A Glossary of NDIS and Disability Services in English, Turkish, Arabic, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese and Persian.
  • A series of videos about Discrimination & Disability in Vietnamese, Arabic and Croatian. The videos feature people who have a disability themselves (or care for someone who does) and talk about their respective community’s reactions to them and understandings of disability. View all NDIS related resources here

Alongside the interpreters’ training, CEH has developed a workshop on the same topic for Bicultural Workers and Multicultural Education Aides,

To support them to understand the NDIS and explain it to the families they work with. The training is free and can also be run at people’s workplaces.
