Understanding the NDIS
CEH is helping Interpreters to understand the complexities and distinct terminology of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in order to perform their role in an informed and accurate manner.
Since 2018 we’ve trained over 1000 interpreters in Victoria with the support of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). This 2 hour workshop is offered as a ‘basic’ or ‘advanced’ version, and attracts 10 Professional Development points from NAATI.
The session is collaborative, involving interpreters from the same language group who work together to agree on how NDIS terms and concepts are best interpreted. Interpreters use the resources developed by CEH, such as the: Glossary of NDIS and Disability Services & Health Translations online library to prepare for NDIS participant conversations.
Feedback received from our interpreters is overwhelmingly positive:
- 93 per cent have a better understanding of the concepts and principles of the NDIS
- 82 per cent are more likely to attend an NDIS assignment after undertaking the training.

A separate Understanding the NDIS training workshop is offered to Bicultural Workers and Multicultural Education Aides, in order to make it easier for them to support newly-arrived families wishing to access the new disability system.
The training is free of charge until June 2020.
Working Across Cultures in the Disability Sector
CEH also offers a bespoke version of Foundations of Cultural Competence for service providers working in the disability sector.
Learning goals
- Explore personal cultural understandings
- Recognise the impact of cultural beliefs about disability on service provision, particularly in the context of the NDIS.
- Analyse successful strategies for including and working with people from refugee and migrant backgrounds
