On 18 December every year, the world observes International Migrants Day. This day recognises the large number of migrants worldwide, encouraging us to share information about human rights and the fundamental freedoms of migrants. It also encourages us to share our own experiences and contribute to the development of action plans that will ensure their protection.

Migration occurs in nearly every single country across the world. In 2015, the total number of international migrants globally was estimated as 244 million persons, compared to 175 million in 2000. One in every ten migrants is under the age of 15.

The rising rate of migration is mainly attributed to the large and growing differences between high and low income countries. As the population ages and the younger generations become more educated, there are less people willing to do the low-paid and physically demanding jobs. This leaves a number of positions that cannot be outsourced and can only be filled by migrants.

A lot of the team here at CEH are migrants, so this day holds a very special place in all of our hearts. It reminds us how lucky we are to live in Australia and for all the opportunities we have worked hard to receive. But it also reminds us of those who have not been as fortunate as us, and the continued need to recognise the rights, protection and respect for migrants.
