How Can We Help?

You are here:

Cultural understandings around the causes and impact of disability can lead to discrimination against people living with a disability and their carers. This, in turn, can stop people from accessing services for fear of facing their community’s disapproval.

In this video, Kimly, the mother of a 15 year-old boy with Down Syndrome, talks about her experience raising a child with disability. She described beliefs about disability in the Vietnamese community and how they impact people’s willingness to access support services, and shares her advice for other parents.

This video is part of the Disability and Discrimination series produced by the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health. (CEH). CEH offer a range of services and resources for health, community services and local government professionals as well as community members.
