CEH offers a wide range of modules that cover cultural diversity, beliefs, communication, assessment, service delivery and evaluation.

Our modules can be presented as introductory, intermediate or advanced, depending on your experience in working with culturally diverse clients or communities.

We can offer individual modules or deliver a combination of modules according to your organisation's needs.

 

An Introduction to Cultural Diversity

This module introduces health and community workers to key migration and diversity concepts such as acculturation, ethnicity, race and culture.

Key learning outcomes

  • Understand the key links between culture and health
  • Understand the impact of migration and settlement on individual health
  • Discuss individual and cultural differences and what constitutes ‘identity'
  • Explain the impact of personal cultural interpretations on service provision
  • Demonstrate an openness to employing culturally appropriate strategies for working with people from CALD backgrounds

Consumer Participation and CALD Communities

The active involvement of consumers and communities from CALD backgrounds is integral to the development, implementation and evaluation of effective, responsive and appropriate health care. This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance their skills in developing effective participation methodologies.

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify consumer participation principles and effective strategies for inclusive consumer and community participation at both an organisational and practitioner level
  • Identify the barriers and enablers to working effectively with CALD communities in consumer participation strategies
  • Understand the value of consumer participation in the health system and the issues CALD consumers face when participating in the health system
  • Summarise the key links between culture, diversity, and health and community participation

Cross-Cultural Communication for Frontline Workers

This module is for reception and client service staff in health and community organisations. It offers strategies and skills for effective communication with people who do not speak English or who have a low level of English proficiency.

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify key principles of effective cross-cultural communication
  • Understand cultural aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication styles
  • Assess a client's need for an interpreter
  • Implement strategies for effective communication with clients from diverse backgrounds

Culturally Appropriate Health Promotion

Aimed at health promotion coordinators and project managers, this module focuses on cultural competence in the application of health promotion principles and frameworks.

Key learning outcomes

  • Apply health promotion principles and frameworks to target groups
  • Include cultural considerations in health promotion strategy selection
  • Understand cultural considerations when undertaking health promotion work
  • Implement culturally appropriate methods of evaluation when working with target groups

Cultural Competency for Managers and Supervisors

For managers and supervisors of health and community organisations, this module explains how to integrate cultural competency frameworks into service delivery, to improve outcomes for CALD clients.

Key learning outcomes

  • Understand the cultural competency framework
  • Develop strategies to create programs that are culturally inclusive
  • Incorporate the cultural competency framework in organisational structures and policies

Cultural Diversity and Palliative Care

This module will help palliative care staff and volunteers to deliver culturally appropriate service for patients from CALD backgrounds.

Key learning outcomes

  • Discuss cultural diversity concepts and terminology and the links between culture and health
  • Identify barriers to and enablers of working effectively with cultural and linguistic diversity in service delivery
  • Understand the importance of using interpreters and improve skills in working with interpreters

Culturally Inclusive Health Assessment

This module is designed to develop health workers' skills and knowledge on how to conduct culturally appropriate and inclusive assessment when working with clients from CALD backgrounds.

Key learning outcomes

  • Discuss different beliefs about health and illness
  • Recognise the impact of cultural influences in health assessment
  • Develop strategies and skills to conduct culturally inclusive assessment
  • Identify explanatory models of health and illness

Engaging CALD Communities in Physical Activity

This module offers strategies that health and community workers can use to promote physical activity in CALD communities. 

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify barriers to physical activity program access for people from CALD communities
  • Promote physical activity to people from CALD communities
  • Implement strategies to engage CALD communities in physical activity

Negotiating Between Health Beliefs

This module discusses different understandings of illness and associated health-seeking practices and behaviours. It identifies strategies for effective engagement with CALD communities to improve consumer health and wellbeing. 

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify key components of the world's major health belief systems
  • Understand the process of cultural change as it relates to health beliefs
  • Negotiate between diverse health beliefs through an explanatory models approach

Planning and Delivering Culturally Appropriate Services for People with Disabilities

This module looks at the ways in which disability is understood and explained in different communities and the impact this has on CALD access to health services.

Key learning outcomes

  • Plan and deliver culturally appropriate supports for people with a disability
  • Identify and minimise barriers to access for people with a disability from CALD communities
  • Incorporate cultural diversity in organisational structures, policies and systems

Problem Gambling and Culturally Diverse Communities

Our Multicultural Gambler's Help Program offers free organisational training for Gambler's Help and community organisations. Training covers a range of issues relating to problem gambling and culturally diverse communities, including:

  • Problem gambling in CALD communities
  • Cultural competence for Gambler' Help services
  • Working with interpreters
  • Delivering Gambler's Help services to a multicultural society
  • Culturally responsive intake and assessment

Sexual Health and Culturally Diverse Communities

Our Multicultural Health and Support Service presents a workshop that provides an overview of the various perceptions, beliefs and barriers that exist in the newly-arrived African communities in relation to sexual health issues, particularly HIV, hepatitis B and C, and STI. It is designed for health and community workers working with newly-arrived refugee groups (particularly from Africa).

Key learning outcomes

  • Understand cultural and religious perceptions and practices
  • Identify implications for health promotion, service access and delivery
  • Apply strategies to implement culturally appropriate work practices

Strengthening Language Services in Health and Community Organisations

This module explains how effective language services can improve quality of client care and health outcomes, increase access to services and ensure both client and practitioner satisfaction.

Key learning outcomes

  • Understand the Victorian Government policy on language services
  • Implement strategies to improve language services provision
  • Identify strategies for organisational systems to develop and support language services
  • Understand how to work effectively with bilingual staff, interpreters and translators

Working with Interpreters

This module helps health and community workers to develop skills in working with interpreters and clients who have a low level of English proficiency.

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify when to use an interpreter
  • Understand the role of an interpreter
  • Develop the necessary skills required to work with an interpreter

Writing for Effective Cross-Cultural Communication

This module helps health and community workers to develop skills in written communication with CALD clients and communities.

Key learning outcomes

  • Identify the benefits and limitations of translated materials
  • Identify key steps for developing effective content and dissemination
  • Understand how to improve writing and lay out of information for easy reading
  • Better resolve any issues that may arise from the process of translating material
