The Library Catalogue contains over 11,000 specialised items on subjects relating to culture, ethnicity and health. These items include books, journal articles and videos that are housed in the specialist library collection, plus online documents produced both by CEH and other agencies in the health and multicultural sectors which can be downloaded most commonly in PDF or viewed as HTML pages in other websites.
All of these items can be searched by:
- keyword
- title
- author
- subject heading
- organisation/publisher
- year of publication
If you are looking for information on a particular topic, we suggest that you use the keyword field for best results.
Searches can also isolate the types of resources that are to be searched by selecting any of the following in the drop down menu at the bottom of the search screen:
- full catalogue
- books
- articles
- audio visual material
- online documents
You can choose between two search modes:
A) Basic search
This mode is suitable for either very broad searches, with just one keyword or if you are looking for a particular resource of which you know the exact title or author or publisher. If you would like to conduct a more specific search on a certain topic we suggest you use the 'advanced search mode'.
B) Advanced Search
This interface allows you to narrow or broaden your search by using additional searching techniques. In the drop down box on the left you choose the field you would like to search in (you can use the same field e.g.'keyword' several times and combine various fields). In the drop down menu on the right you can choose one of the three boolean operators (and, or, and not). Use the 'help' menu for more instructions.

Read this first!
In the form, different fields can be filled. After you have clicked 'Submit form', a search will be performed for records that comply with the query you have formed by entering data into the fields. The order in which you fill the fields is not important.
The searchroutine is case insensitive.
Field
Here you select the field to search on. When you want to search more than one value in a field, select the field in several lines and enter the values you want to find. You can set the truncation for all those fields separately
Value
The value you enter is the value the wwwopac will search for. The order in which you key in the words is not important.
Truncation
Using truncation (by checking the checkbox) any string of characters (or no characters at all) is allowed after the ones you've already entered. This means that the search will include any word starting with the characters you've entered and the string of characters itself.
Listings
By clicking on one of the buttons on the right of the searchform you'll be able to search through a listing of possible names which can be found in the catalogus. It's possible to search on authors, organisations or subjects. Fill in your searchkey in the field on the left of the button and click on the button. The result will be shown in the frame of the helptext. The number behind the term is the number of records which possess that term. Click on it and you'll get the records.
Title
In this field you can enter words from the title. When you enter more than one word, all records will be retrieved that have those words in no particular order in the title.
Author
In this field you can enter the name of the author. An example from the database: 'bo', which will find 'bochner', but also 'bojar' and many others starting with 'bo'.
Organisation
Organisation works like 'author'. An example from the database would be 'SBS'.
Keyword
In this field you can enter words from title, publications detail, abstract, comments fields to look for. The order of the words is not important.
Subjects
Here you can enter subjects that the search engine should look for. The order of the words is not important. An example from the database: 'bal', which will find 'baltic', but also 'balinese'.
Search in
In this field you can enter in which database you wish to search on. Click on the arrow next to the database-listing and select the wanted database.
