Training

MHSS offers training to health and community service providers who work with migrant and refugee clients  on issues relating to blood-borne viruses (BBV) and sexually-transmissible infections (STI).

One-day training at CEH

We offer a one-day workshop at CEH in Carlton several times a year, or on request.

This training provides an overview of the various perceptions, beliefs and barriers that exist in newly-arrived communities in relation to sexual health issues, particularly HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, STI and female genital mutilation.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  •  understand cultural and religious perceptions and practices in relation to BBV/STI
  •  identify implications for health promotion, service access and delivery
  •  apply strategies to implement culturally appropriate work practices.

We have provided this training for youth workers, refugee health nurses, school nurses, drug and alcohol workers, interpreters and support workers for refugee minors.

Training at your workplace

We can facilitate three-hour training sessions at your workplace or provide one-hour workshops on specific areas of sexual health.

Our clients have included:

  •  local nurses, GPs, refugee workers and allied health workers in Ballarat and Geelong
  •  nurses working with refugee patients at Monash Medical Centre
  •  nurses in Hobart and other health workers working with refugees in Tasmania.
