Conducting focus groups with CALD communities

Wednesday 18 August, 9am - 1.30pm

Focus groups enable you to gather qualitative information, obtain rich insights and feedback, plan and evaluate services, and test products or messages.

Careful planning will make an enormous difference to the quality of information you collect, and focus groups with CALD participants require several additional considerations.

This workshop takes you through a step-by-step process for planning, resourcing and conducting a focus group with CALD participants.

You will discover:

  • Ways to find and recruit appropriate participants
  • A checklist to help you organise your focus group

Meeting the needs of ageing CALD clients

Wednesday 15 September, 9am - 1.30pm

Victoria's post-war migration population is ageing, and aged care services can expect a growing number of clients from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

Clients will vary in their family structures, cultural preferences and expectations of aged care. As they get older, many will prefer to communicate in their first language.

This workshop covers the key issues affecting CALD clients, offering strategies to address these issues in a framework of culturally competent care.

The workshop is co-presented with the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing. It covers:

  • Demographics of ageing CALD populations in Victoria
  • Cultural perspectives on family and intergenerational issues, social networks and social isolation
  • Key principles and strategies for working with clients and their families

  • Strategies that lead to long-term engagement with CALD communities

Social marketing in a multicultural society

Wednesday 20 April, 9am - 1.30pm

Social marketing campaigns rely on powerful, emotive messages to motivate audiences and change behaviour. But in a multilingual and multicultural society, it's no longer possible to create a single message that resonates with everyone.

This workshop presents strategies for culturally targeted social marketing, from gathering key information on your target community to choosing your strategy, testing your messages and finding the most appropriate channels to engage with your audience.

We discuss:

  • How to obtain insight into the attitudes, beliefs, values and behaviours of your target audience
  • How to adapt your message and strategy to the needs of your audience
  • The value of a stakeholder reference group
  • Choosing appropriate media and communication channels
  • Ways to evaluate the impact of your campaign
